Overview

About Private VPN Pro

Private VPN Pro lets you build a VPN out of computers you already own. Switch on Gateway mode on any Windows, macOS or Linux machine, and your other devices, including Android phones, can send their internet traffic through that computer's connection and browse with its public IP address.

Gateways are visible on your network but locked. Joining one needs its 256-bit network key, which you type or scan as a QR code once per network. Discovery beacons are signed, control messages are encrypted, and the tunnel itself is WireGuard with a network-wide preshared key. Clients present a fresh random key for each session, and gateways keep client state in memory only, with no logs.

Once you connect, the app fails closed. If the gateway goes to sleep or the app crashes, your traffic is held or blocked instead of leaking your real IP address, and the block survives a restart until the client reconnects. A Problems panel explains anything that needs attention, such as unprotected IPv6 or DNS, with a button to fix it.

On desktops the app lives in the system tray and opens a local web page for its settings. The gateway runs in userspace, so sharing a connection needs no administrator rights or routing changes, and clients can never reach the gateway computer or your LAN unless you allow it. Key holders can see each gateway's country, city, ISP, public IP and local time before connecting.

Features

What it does

Switch on Gateway mode on a Windows, Mac or Linux computer and route your laptop or Android phone through its connection over WireGuard, with a kill switch.
  • Gateway mode

Share any Windows, macOS or Linux computer's internet connection with your other devices with one switch.

  • One key per network

Join with a 256-bit network key or QR code once, and reset the key whenever you want to revoke access.

  • WireGuard tunnel

Modern encryption with a preshared key and a fresh client key every session.

  • Kill switch

Fails closed on dropped connections, crashes and restarts, so your real IP address does not leak.

  • No logs on gateways

Client state is kept in memory only, and nothing about connected devices is written to disk.

  • Gateway details

See a gateway's country, city, ISP, public IP, time zone and local time before you connect.

  • Problems panel

Plain-language warnings for blocked connections, unprotected IPv6 or DNS and missing firewall rules, each with a fix button.

  • Tray app

Runs from the tray or menu bar, with a local web interface protected by a one-time login link.

  • Use gateways from anywhere

Forward two UDP ports on the gateway's router and add it by address to connect from outside your network.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Can't find what you're looking for? See the store FAQ or write to humans@thinktools.dev.

What does the Apps & tools tier include?
Client apps for Windows (x64 and Arm), macOS, Linux (amd64 and arm64) and Android, with Gateway mode built into the desktop apps, a license key and all updates. The Full source code tier adds the complete Go source and build system.
Is this a VPN subscription service?
No. No ThinkTools servers are involved. Your traffic leaves through a computer you own, so websites see that computer's public IP address. It is a way to use your home or office connection from your other devices.
Which devices can be gateways?
Computers on Windows 10 or 11, macOS 11 or later, and Linux can act as gateways and as clients. Android 8 or later is client-only. On desktop systems, connecting as a client asks once for administrator approval.
Can I use a gateway away from home?
Yes. Devices on the same Wi-Fi or LAN find gateways automatically. From outside, forward UDP ports 51820 and 51821 on the gateway's router and add the gateway by address.
Can I build my own product on the source code?
Yes, with the Full source code tier, which covers use in your own products and client work. The Source License page lists exactly what is allowed.
How do updates, support and refunds work?
Updates are delivered through your order page. Email support comes from real people at humans@thinktools.dev. For refund terms, see Refunds.
